As the Senate gets ready to pass a $3.8 trillion dollar budget the Department of Energy is carving pumpkins.

Hey kids, we all know how much you wanted to make your Jack-O-Lantern look like Billy the Puppet, and your dad wanted to do a Death Star, but the Department of Energy has a much better idea. How about carving a CFL light bulb, or a windmill? Doesn’t that sound cool? Not only that, if you do an “energy-themed” pumpkin, you can share it on Instagram!

From the Department of Energy website:

To commemorate National Energy Action Month, we’re featuring some scarily effective ways to save energy at home… We also put together some energy-themed pumpkin patterns to help “energize” your neighborhood for Halloween. Send us photos of your energy-themed jack-o-lanterns via Twitter,Instagram, Facebook or email at newmedia@hq.doe.gov and we’ll share our favorites.

And to get you started, you can download a PDF of all these cool designs. Now it might seem like a ridiculous wast of money to have overpaid Federal Employees designing pumpkin patterns, and monitoring social networks to see if there are any kids actually nerdy enough to carve an electric car on the front of a pumpkin, but it’s not. Because according to the website, your pumpkin is causing Global Warming.

(h/t: Washington Times)

With the passing of Halloween, millions of pounds of pumpkins have turned from seasonal decorations to trash destined for landfills, adding to more than 254 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) produced in the United States every year…At landfills, MSW decomposes and eventually turns into methane—a harmful greenhouse gas that plays a part in climate change, with more than 20 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide (CO2).

That’s right kiddies, your Holiday is going to mean that someday you won’t be able to go trick or treating without a boat, and kids in the third world are going to lose their parents in a horrible storm, just because you had to carve a stupid little pumpkin.

Happy Halloween!
