A recent article suggests that gluten-free diets may not be the best thing for most people.
The Gluten-Free fad is out of control. When potato chips and whiskey claim to be Gluten Free, you know some people are getting overly obsessed.
While it’s nice that those with coeliac disease now have menu selections that cater to their condition, it’s also a little ridiculous that people who do not have the disease have to share a gluten-free pizza with someone who only imagines that they have it.
But now there is a good chance the fad might be over. According to a recent article, gluten-free options are actually less healthy.
…writing in the Journal of Pediatrics, Dr Norelle Reilly, of Columbia University Medical Centre, in New York, warned that gluten-free alternatives were often loaded with fat and sugar and lacked nutrients.
“There is no evidence that processed gluten free foods are healthier nor have there been proven health or nutritional benefits of a gluten free diet. There are no data to support the theory of intrinsically toxic properties of gluten in otherwise healthy adults and children” (full story)
It makes sense. Gluten its not only the part of the flour that makes it chewy and delicious, it’s also the portion that contains the protien, and most of the other nutrients.
There is a reason why gluten-free vegans look like they’re starving to death, they probably are.
I often order food with extra gluten.
The gluten-free diet is only good for those of us who have real auto-immune issues with gluten. Fakers piss me off.
Grains and starch are not good for any of us.

That dough looks like a ballsack
I hear that prime rib and lobster with drawn butter are all gluten free. So is whiskey and rye, gin and tonic water.
Grading papers. Time for another “gluten free” shot.
Too much hype on gluten free products. I’m not sold.
As a person who can’t eat gluten, I will never understand why those who can, won’t. I’d kill for a good slice of pizza.

I have a basic principal when it comes to food. If it tastes good I eat it. There is no postponing death. Sure I could live 5 years longer if i cut out red meat but that would be 5 miserable years without red meat
I saw a “Gluten Free” written on a box of frozen burgers…. I wasn’t aware that gluten was a problem with beef
Gluten is in a lot of places you wouldn’t expect it to be.
They used to call it a Mucus Free Diet. It was the basis of Dr. JH Kellogg and his Health Crazyness. Although much of his Guess Science was later proved to be good ideas. Which was a pretty good movie. Underrated. The Road to Wellville. A mostly true story turned into a farce just like Leatherheads
For some, like my wife who gets I’ll for a day or two if she eats even a tiny bit of gluten, it’s not a fad. I’m on a largely lactose free diet– have been since I was 18– but it’s not a fad. The moron scientists say gluten-free diets are harmful base their claim on idiots who insist on eating everything they USTA eat when they still consumed products containing gluten. A child could figure out that it’s not the “glutens fres-ness” of the diet that causes harm, but the increase in sugar and fat to make up for the lack of gluten. Of course, that makes for a boring story. A better story seeks to emphasize the cranks. A gluten-free diet will make you healthier if you don’t subsequently gorge on high-fat substitutes. And, in the case of my lovely wife, cutting out gluten will cure acid reflux, gastric distress and, it is hoped prevent stomach and/or esophogeal cancer (just two of the dangers listed as a possible outcome of chronic reflux). But by all means, laugh at the fad and ridicule Gwyneth Paltrow and, by extension, anyone who avoids gluten.
Ah yes, the old “you can’t laugh at foolish people because some people aren’t foolish” argument. I do not ridicule anyone who avoids gluten, but I can laugh at those who make it worthwhile for whiskey manufacturers to mark their product as “gluten free.”
The article leads the mocking. The manufacturer caters to the fad, which is shaped and perpetuated by the media. And we all ridicule, by extension, the folks who, for any reason, avoid eating gluten. (The articles never or rarely mention intolerance and only occasionally mention Celiac’s). And few of the articles are snark free. Its journalistic malpractice compounded by scientific malpractice. Manufacturers and retailers have little choice.
If you’re eating manufactured Gluten-Free!!! crap, sure it’s a bad choice, just like eating manufactured gluten-full crap. But if you’re swapping apple over cheap and nutrition-light bread as a vehicle for peanut butter or Laughing Cow Swiss (one of my best finds in my GF experiment), you’re eating far better. In other words, if GF inspires you to eat more fruits and vegetables, it’s a reasonable diet. (I apologize for my previous wording – that’s what I get for posting from my phone and it’s auto-mangle and not wearing glasses. Oi.)
