Why would anyone think that a roll of Barack Obama toilet paper, is the proper way to celebrate Martin Luther King Day?
I’ve never been a big fan of the Martin Luther King National Holiday. Not because I don’t think the man should be honored, quite the contrary. The man gave his life for what he believed, and those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice always deserve our respect.
I never wanted to see him get a Holiday, because it seems like when you give everyone a day off, they eventually forget why. Many Americans don’t know why they get the last weekend in May off, and if you tell them they are supposed to be remembering something, they think it’s remembering to clean out the grill and getting it ready for Summer.
Much the way Washington and Lincoln are depicted as caricatures in February Mattress Day Sales commercials, I long envisioned the Day when a Martin Luther King jr. look alike would someday tell people they can have a wonderful “dream” on a brand new waterbed!
It started slowly. Although Popeye’s Chicken would always have a “Mid-January” coupon in the newspaper, after the 2008 election they started calling it an MLK Special.
But I have never seen it taken to this extent. I got an eMail from Stupid.com that is probably the most disrespectful event I have seen to date. 20% off on every stupid thing you can imagine, including a Hillary nut-cracker, “I Kissed a Democrat” gum, and pimp mugs. Certainly those who worked to honor the memory of MLK never expected this. (Even though there were many who warned them, that this would be the eventuality.) This is so over the top, that I would almost suggest eliminating the National Holiday.
But it’s probably too late for that now. Government workers already plan their mid-winter vacations around it.
