After successfully ruining Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Political Correctniks have set their sights on another holiday.

It almost sounds too ridiculous to be true, but The Left has never failed to amaze me. According to the National Review, colleges are sponsoring costume awareness hot lines. Much the same way you would call a Dig Line before you plant a shrubbery, you can now check if your costume is going to strike a nerve. Similar to the complicated cable and plumbing infrastructure that lies right below the surface of your back yard, sensitivities have now become so complex you need to consult a professional before you apply that greasepaint.

Colleges are hanging flyers around campus with phone numbers of officials that students can call to consult with about whether or not their Halloween costume is perfectly politically correct… The poster contains the phone numbers and e-mails of five (five!) campus officials that students can contact and discuss the very important issue of whether or not what they will dress up as to get drunk in will be advancing social-justice causes. (full story)

I may be mistaken, but I always thought Halloween was a time for being insensitive. As a kid, we always wanted to dress up like something scary. In college, the idea was to make a costume so inappropriate, that everyone at the party thought you were hilarious. The original idea of the traditional Pagan holiday, was to dress up like evil spirits, so that real evil spirits could walk the earth unmolested. I’ve never known an evil spirit to be overly concerned with offending people.

I can’t imagine how far costume censorship will go. Mummy costumes are offensive to people of Egyptian Heritage, and the traditional Princess celebrates Privilege. So what’s left? Probably clowns. There’s got to be clowns.

Maybe next year.
