An FEC vote proves the Federal Government has a limited sense of humor.
Every comic knows that your not allowed to tell a TSA agent how the show went. It doesn’t matter whether you killed or bombed, if you say it out loud, you’re probably getting arrested.
Apparently this lack of humor has bled over to the Federal Election Commission: According to the Washington Examiner, two out of the three Democrats on the commission voted to fine Mike Huckabee, for making a mildly amusing remark (h/t: Drudge)
In the latest display of FEC Democratic efforts to regulate speech and target Republicans, Commissioners Ann Ravel and Ellen Weintraub backed a complaint against Huckabee, who made the joke during his May 2015 presidential candidacy announcement.
At that event, he said, “I will be funded and fueled not by the billionaires, but by working people across America who will find out that $15 and $25 a month contributions can take us from Hope to higher ground. If you want to give a million dollars, please do it, but most can’t.” (full story)
I think Mr. Huckabee’s biggest mistake was his lack of adequate hyperbole. Had he said, “if you want to give a billion dollars…” there would be no question that he was joking. Unfortunately the former Governor comes from a time when a million dollars was a lot of money. Today, it barely enough to buy a twenty minute speech from the Democrat front runner.
Next to political speech, comedy is the most important speech to warrant First Amendment protections. While political speech is necessary to promote Politicians, comedy is necessary to remind Politicians they’re made of the same kind of meat we all are.
Even FEC Commisssioners.
Another Slagism……….funny and true.
